Andrés E. Carvallo

Andres is currently the Chief Information Officer at Austin Energy, where he is responsible for the technology vision, planning, development and operations across the enterprise. Since February of 2003, he has been driving a wireless and SOA transformation to deliver a fully-integrated and self-healing enterprise. Our current strategic plan is to deliver the first smart grid in the US by 2009. In addition to his responsibilities as CIO, he is a member of the 8 person executive team, and a member of the Innovation and Opportunity Development executive board. Outside of Austin Energy, he is a board member for the Center for Commercialization of Electric Technologies, chairman for the Large Public Power Companies’ CIO Task Force, chairman of the Operations, Systems Integration and Systems Modeling Team for the Pecan Street Project, and an advisor to several companies.

Andres is a requested speaker on Smart Grid, CleanTech, Green IT, SOA, Wireless and Running IT as a Business. And he has been awarded IT Executive of the Year by AITP in 2005, Premier 100 IT Leader and Best in Class of Premier 100 by Computerworld in 2006, CIO 100 Award by CIO Magazine in 2006, InformationWeek 500 in 2007 and 2008, Top 12 Green IT Company by Computerworld in 2008 and 2009, and Computerworld Honors Laureate, Finalist, and 21st Century Achievement Award in 2009.

Andres has great knowledge of the Energy, Wireless, Software, and Computer industries. Andres has held c-level and senior management titles at Austin Energy, four start-ups, Philips Electronics, Digital Equipment Corporation, and Borland. Andres started his professional career as a product manager for Windows and DOS at Microsoft in Redmond, WA.

Andres' human dimension and character are defined by being a former member of Governor Bush's IT National Steering Committee, a board advisor to several companies and institutions, a former president of his Home Owners Association, a member of the Knights of Columbus, a spiritual director at his Church, an Eagle Scout and a 1st Dan Black Belt in Tae-Kwon-Do with successful competitions (national sparring champ in 1977, 1978, 1983).

Andres received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kansas, completed the Utility Executive Course at the University of Idaho, and completed executive management programs at Stanford University and the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
